A little bit of History : Grün 80 !... Switzerland !

Grün 80 was the second Swiss exhibition horticulture and landscape management. It was held in Brülingen (Basel) from 12 April to 12 October 1980.

This environmental event has theme "Man and Nature". The land of the exhibition was extended towards Neue Welt, to the south, to the Birse, eastward. It was divided into six thematic areas: the market, the issue of land, soil and water, beautiful gardens, planting and harvesting, green university.

This area today is a popular recreational area, including the most important parts are the botanical garden, the English park, the Park "Im Grünen" organic farm and sporting facilities.

The company Migros Basel committed itself in 1980 to maintain the site for 100 years.

The Expo cost about 60 million Swiss francs and the exhibition area was 46 hectares. 13,000 trees and shrubs were planted. One of the milestones was the "Dino". The large concrete dinosaur was preserved until the beginning of 2005. It was created for the duration of the Expo, but they had to resign ourselves to the demolition because of its aging structure and the collapse danger he represented. The old Dino was then replaced by a Seismosaurus, even bigger!

Another landmark of the exhibition was the tower with mobile platform going up and down in the manner of a lift. After the Expo, the Tower was sold to the theme park Europa-Park and became Euro-Tower.

Sculpture in red-brown iron "anvil" of Bernhard Luginbühl, at the lake, also represented a landmark in this Expo, and also a symbol.

Note that Queen Elizabeth was one of three million visitors to 80 Grün!

"The Authentic Garden" at Taipei Flora Expo

We have talk about remarquable participation of Greece at the Floriade in 2012, but our friend Nikos Thymakis was also at Tapiei Flora Expo in 2010, with Mike Lagos and crucial help in3D design from Cornelius Vekkos and plant donation from Giorgos Kostelenos Olive Nurseries..

He represented Greece with a much quality project named "The Authentic Garden", for the Hellenic participation at this Expo.

He promotes stepping stones for native plants (olive tree, herbs) and soft landscaping. The Hellenic garden took finally 6th position among 31 countries.

The full theme was "The Authentic Garden : a flowering river to the new horizon"... with a clear message... planting give us a better futur while saving environment and climate ! What a good program.

Rich of around 6000 species, Lots of theme were chosen for this project, those who are the best representants of the country.
A river was created inside the Hellenic Garden, to symbolize the path of the mankind, since the more deep past.
The Olympics rings were also there, but of course... only "green" to celebrate an unity around a only one color ! And many other details as so good symbols of Greece !

After the exhibition he made the feasibility study and reports for both the Greek Government and Taipei Representative Office in Athens about establishing a Trade Office of Greece in Taiwan. (2009-2011).

What a pity there's no participation of Greece at Expo 2016 Antalya... we looking forward to see other nice realizations of Nikos Thymakis !

Greece at Expo 2016 Antalya ?

Unfortunately, no hellenic garden at Expo 2016 Antalya !

Even if this nice project had auspices from Ministry of Culture and Central Union of Municipalities of Greece, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the very last moment didn't make the "note" that was important to transfer officially the documents to Turkish authorities and Greek Embassy in Ankara ! In this case, impossible to the team to participate in other way as Hellenic Plant Material Exporters Association.

" It's very disapointed for the 30 volunteer expert that did the project of the Hellenic Garden. "Where is the hope has to bloom, for the kids, for the future, they refuse us to participate and give a peacefull message of friendship, awareness, hellenism... What a pity indeed...", said Nikos Thymakis, General Manager of Hellenic Participation in EXPO 2016 and Honorary President of Hellenic Plant Material Exporters Association (Athens, 18 February 2016).

Personally, I want to thank my friend Nikos Thymakis, for outstanding commitment in projects close to his heart. Proud to be Greek, he made every effort to participate and be a worthy representative of his country, Greece, in this horticultural exhibition in Antalya.
I remember having discovered his work during my visit to the Floriade 2012 in Venlo, which I enjoyed, and I already made myself a joy to discover the new creations of this passionated team at the Turkish exhibition!
Even for dedicated and passionated workers, efforts are not always rewarded as we have seen with this Hellenic garden project... I wish him the other wonderful projects in which it can still invest him with passion, and make us dream !
